What Is The Nunavut Land Claims Agreement

For the federal government, the division of the Northwest Territories and the structure of the territorial government was a matter of public government that affected all residents of the Northwest Territories, not a matter of Aboriginal rights. In short, if the Canadian government could not reach an agreement with the Inuit — the proud Canadians who campaigned for Canada`s sovereignty in the Arctic — with whom could it do so? In the spring of 1980, ITC and Canada agreed to resume negotiations on the Nunavut land claim, with the dimension that the Inuit proposal to create the territory of Nunavut would be dealt with as part of a political development process in the NWT, separate from, but parallel to, land claim negotiations.
